Public affairs/Government relations (& Corporate responsibility)

“Public Affairs is now a commercial imperative – it can help avoid excessive cost being put upon the business.”
Director of Group Public Affairs & Policy, FTSE100

The encroachment of government into most areas of business was confirmed by a recent study by McKinsey which found that “Government is likelier to affect companies’ economic value than any other group of stakeholders except customers.” Most companies now have to ensure that their business strategies are informed by the regulatory and policy agendas that dominate their sectors. This has prompted senior management to become considerably more interested in, and demanding of, the contribution and capability of its public affairs resource.

Public affairs and corporate responsibility have been grouped together because the blurring of the lines between societal issues, politics and policy have caused the agendas of the two functions increasingly to overlap; to the extent that several companies have now integrated both disciplines into one function.
